001 | Marko D | 2026
Captured in Dunedin, New Zealand
For most of his life, Dunedin has been home. Although born in Auckland, Marko grew up in the south, surrounded by family, familiar landscapes, and the bush reserves and open spaces he has come to know so well. It is a place that has shaped his sense of belonging and grounded his outlook on life.
Life has not been without its defining moments. The loss of his father left a lasting mark, changing the way he viewed the healthcare system and reinforcing the importance of compassion, accountability, and care. The experience challenged him deeply and continues to influence how he sees the world today.
Work became another turning point. After years of casual employment, Marko found a role that suited his strengths: solving problems, organising complex logistics, and making things happen under pressure. He thrives on challenges, particularly those that require careful planning and determination. Despite difficult periods and workplace obstacles, he has remained committed to doing the job to the best of his ability.
Outside of work, few people know that Marko was once a highly competitive athlete and cyclist. One of his proudest achievements came at age 40 when he won a local half marathon against competitors much younger than himself, a testament to his discipline and competitive spirit.
Living simply has always been important to him. For many years he chose a life largely disconnected from modern technology, preferring practical skills, self-reliance, and a straightforward approach to life. Yet he remains open to learning, believing that no one ever knows everything and that there is always something new to discover.
If Marko could choose how he is remembered, it would not be for titles or achievements. He would rather be known as someone people could trust: a person who kept his word, could be relied upon, and quietly got on with the job, no matter the challenge.
“If I said I was going to do something, I would do it.”
