Tina has always lived in Dunedin; it is where she was born and raised. She is familiar with the places here, the lifelong memories created, and the family and community she knows well. She has never felt the urge or need to look elsewhere because everything she needs is here.
Talking with Tina, it was easy to read that caring for people has been a common thread throughout her life. She talked about her work as a caregiver, who prides herself in helping people recovering from injury and regaining confidence in life. Tina finds it very rewarding to support people through difficult times and enjoys celebrating the progress milestones that her clients achieve through the recovery process. This outwardly caring and genuinely empathetic nature is who she is, at her core.
I prompted a question about unique experiences in her life; and an unexpected story was told about her younger years. When she was 21 and while working in a rest home, she was sponsored by a group of nuns to travel to Paris, France on a month-long pilgrimage. This was Tina’s first overseas trip and opened the door to a much larger world for her. Even now, she says that the opportunity was something she never imagined would happen.
Tina also spoke about some personal life challenges that demonstrated determination in her life. She completed two half marathons in her forties, that saw her focus on a set goal and then work hard towards achieving it. In more recent times, that same streak of determination has helped her regain control of her health. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Tina took on the challenge to improve her condition through sustainable lifestyle changes, that included discovering a new passion for walking. Even today she finds time to go on new walks and trails to maintain that healthier lifestyle.
I was surprised to hear that Tina also has a creative side, that understandably many people may not see straight way. She is a keen writer, poet, photographer, and has shared her writings at local poetry groups. Tina loves to learn new things, and there is always a willingness and determination to pursue this; whether its exploring a new walking track, writing poetry, helping people, or other personal goals.
Tina's portrait was captured at the Dunedin Botanic Garden, a place she often visits, and a place that reflects her connection to nature, wellbeing, and active lifestyle.
As she looks ahead in life, Tina hopes to continue the routine of doing the things that matter to her most; staying active and looking after her health, supporting family, friends, and clients, and making the most of each day. I asked Tina how she hopes that people will remember her, and the answer was about her approach to life.
“I've always tried not to give up.”
